DIATOMACEOUS EARTH ( DE ) Insect Control
Diatomaceous (die-uh-toe-may-shus) Earth, isn't dirt or earth. It’s not even coloured like it. Its composition is made up of the broken up shells of diatoms that lived long ago and died in groups so massive that they can be mined and bull-dozed.
This a non-chemical insecticide, used to control pests in crops and gardens. This product dehydrates the insect causing death. It is extremely effective against soft bodied insects such as slugs, aphids, ants, earwigs, and roaches.
DE is 100% ecologically safe to the environment and non-poisonous to humans and animals. Here is a fun fact - if you've eaten anything made with flour you've eaten DE. It's used in commercial grain storage as a means of natural, poison-free, insect control.
Please be aware that there are several different types of DE. Not all DE’s are non toxic. For example, DE that is used for swimming pool filters is toxic to humans and will not control insects. Become informed.
Using DE is easy. One uses DE by sprinkling it on the ground, directly onto ant mounds, or even sprinkled onto plant leaves and stems. DE works by slicing and dicing the insects that walk through it.
You can add DE to the food of your pets and farm animals to kill internal parasites.
Farmers can use DE in the poultry's dust bath to eliminate fleas and mites. Simply add it to their feed (or to any animal's feed) to reduce or eliminate internal parasites and worms. A small handful per bucket of feed is a good start for farm use. Put a tablespoon in your pets’ food dish.
Brush and work DE into the coats of livestock and pets to remove ticks, and fleas.
Another use for our DE is in getting rid of bed bugs! This is an area that is extremely personal to many, but the infestation of bed bugs is becoming rampant North American wide. Just take our DE and sprinkle it on the bed frame, mattresses and around the bed. Don't go crazy on the application, just put down a fine sprinkling. When the bed bugs walk across the DE, their fate is sealed.
