Before the arrival of the chemical companies, our grandfathers and their forefathers knew that in order to feed the plant, we first had to feed the soil. They knew that whether growing trees, fruits, flowering plants, vegetables, sod, turf, lawn as well as agricultural crops, greenhouse, and hydroponics growers, they first had to feed the soil and the soil in return would feed the plant. If it worked to grow organically back then --- why do we feel now we know more than Mother Nature?
In most cases nature fixes its own weed and insect problems. An insect will not attack a healthy plant. A walk through a long standing forest will show that nature will grow a different plant almost every three years to supply nutrients needed to keep the soil in balance and …no weeds.
Exhausted and devitalized soil results in internally weak plants, which are highly vulnerable to diseases and pest attack. They will also be nutritionally incomplete, will keep poorly and taste inferior compared to the way food tasted prior to the synthetic chemical fertilization era. The best approach is the defensive one of properly feeding the plant to increase its strength and resistance to pests and doing it products that work in sync with nature. This may be done with foliar nutrient sprays and by applying all-natural fertilizing materials on or in the soil, along with protective mulching where appropriate.
